National Bed Capacity Review

FactFile Small Image

The HSE/NHO engaged PA Consulting to enable the HSE to plan for future acute bed capacity needs based on review of implementation of international best practice and its application to the Irish healthcare system.

The Report enables the HSE to identify the acute bed capacity requirements until the year 2020 enabling the HSE to plan for future needs based on evidence. This identifies nationally, to HSE Administrative Area level, the number and type (adult/paediatric/medical/surgical/critical care split) of acute beds that are required. The report identifies capital and revenue cost implications and advises on how to meet the identified need, including timing and feasibility.

The Acute Hospital Bed Capacity Review was published early in 2008. The Review addresses the current bed deficit and concludes the "this shortfall can be met from the additional beds detailed in the HSE Capital Programme plus the beds that will be delivered by the Co-Located Private Hospitals".

A shortfall of critical care beds is also identified in this review and this shortfall is also being addressed in the projects under construction in 2008/2009.
