In order to take forward the themes contained in 'Quality & Fairness' about partnership, integration and redesign, and to deliver on the transformation programme,  local review of acute service in the Mid West & the South will be undertaken during 2007. The aim is to:

  • explore and advise on strategies to secure a sustainable configuration of  health services in the Mid-West and Southern Regions for the long term;
  • recommend how sustainability might be supported and enhanced through  improved integration of care services.

Mid West Region

The HSE has engaged a consultancy firm to identify the most appropriate model for acute service provision in HSE Mid-West and to recommend how best to reconfigure acute hospital services to deliver on this model.
The review advises on the overall governance arrangements within and between each hospital site in the Mid-West and promotes opportunities for local access to services and balance local delivery with the need to have centres of excellence providing high quality, modern specialist care.

Key issues include the configuration of hospital and Primary, Community and Continuing Care services in the area, the role of the various providers and patient access/pathways to primary, secondary and tertiary care.

Southern Region

The HSE is also undertaking a review of acute hospital services in Cork and Kerry with a view to developing acute health care which minimises risk to patients and will be in line with best international practice and national policy.

This review will firstly identify an overall model of acute hospital services for HSE South and will particularly focus in on the best configuration of acute hospital services in Cork and Kerry. The primary focus of the review will be to analyse and make specific recommendations on how acute hospital services in Cork and Kerry should be reconfigured to deliver on the recommended regional model (sub-regional scope).

The benefits of both reviews include:

  • Clarity of strategic direction for the development of acute hospital  service provision in the South and Mid West, in line with national and  international best practice.
  • Specific actions identified to reconfigure acute hospital services in both  regions to deliver on the recommended regional model.
  • Improved service delivery for those living in the catchment area.
  • Improved utilisation of available resources
