Survey of 2006-2010 Graduates of a Post Registration Nurse Education Programme Leading to Registration as a Midwife:

A new publication of the summary findings from a survey conducted by the HSE Office of the Nursing and Midwifery Services Director, among graduates who completed a post registration nurse education programme leading to registration as a midwife in 2006 to 2010 is available here.

The overarching purpose of the survey was to determine an employment profile of these new graduates entering the workforce.

Survey highlights

The overall survey findings are encouraging and the plan is to continue to repeat the survey in subsequent years, to compare data and to identify trends over time. The majority of graduates (86% or n = 652) began their initial employment as a registered midwife within maternity services following graduation.

Other findings show that:

• 73% (552) were internally employed (i.e. in the education training hospital);
• 26% (198)) were externally employed (i.e. outside the education training hospital); and
• 1% (6) were not employed.

Conclusion

The findings of the survey will facilitate the Health Service Executive and others such as Government, with the ongoing delivery of the post registration nurse education programme leading to registration as a midwife.
