BestBets image

BETs were developed in the Emergency Department of Manchester Royal Infirmary, UK, to provide rapid evidence-based answers to real-life clinical questions, using a systematic approach to reviewing the literature. BETs take into account the shortcomings of much current evidence, allowing physicians to make the best of what there is. Although BETs initially had an emergency medicine focus, there are a significant number of BETs covering cardiothoracics, nursing, primary care and paediatrics. Health Map - Global Disease Alert Map

HealthMap brings together disparate data sources to achieve a unified and comprehensive view of the current global state of infectious diseases and their effect on human and animal health. This freely available Web site integrates outbreak data of varying reliability, ranging from news sources (such as Google News) to curated personal accounts (such as ProMED) to validated official alerts (such as World Health Organization). Through an automated text processing system, the data is aggregated by disease and displayed by location for user-friendly access to the original alert. HealthMap provides a jumping-off point for real-time information on emerging infectious diseases and has particular interest for public health officials and international travelers.

National Best Practice Guidelines for Informing Families of their Child’s Disability

The way in which families are first informed of their child’s disability is of great importance; this is a very sensitive time which calls for good communication, continuity of care and appropriate and accurate information for parents. Through a comprehensive process of consultation and research with parents and professionals 'National Best Practice Guidelines for Informing Families of their Child’s Disability' were developed by the National Federation of Voluntary Bodies in 2007 with support from the Health Services National Partnership Forum. The Guidelines have received endorsement, welcome and support from all key stakeholders; including parents of children with disabilities, the Department of Health and Children, the Minister for Health and Children, and the HSE.  To download copies of the Guidelines and the ‘Consultation and Research Report’ please see the links below. For further information, or to order copies of the DVD film ‘Words You Never Forget’, which was produced to accompany the Guidelines, please contact the Informing Families Project Co-ordinator, Alison Harnett.
