What is Pathology?

Pathology is the medical specialty concerned with the study of the nature and causes of diseases. It plays a vital role throughout our lives. It underpins every aspect of medicine, from diagnostic testing and monitoring of chronic diseases to cutting-edge genetic research and blood transfusion technologies.

In Ireland, pathology has five major areas of activity: chemical pathology (clinical biochemistry), haematology, histopathology, immunology and microbiology.

The scope of the NCPP is initially limited to clinical chemistry, haematology and immunology/immunoassay though some aspects of microbiology will be included in the guidelines/handbook development. Histopathology matters are primarily the remit of the Faculty of Pathology and the Histopathology Sub group of the Faculty.
