I want to QUIT

Quitting smoking is the most important step you can take to improve your health.

Lots of people quit by themselves, and you will find a lot of useful tips and information on our dedicated website, www.quit.ie.

Why not give yourself the best possible chance and get some help to QUIT. Using supports can double your chances of quitting for good.

If you have tried before and it didn't stick - don't worry. A lot of people try a few times before they quit for good, and each time you try, you learn skills to make the next time that bit easier.

Where can you get help to QUIT?

  • Visit www.quit.ie and sign up for an online QUITPLAN
  • Contact a HSE smoking cessation service near you - details are below
  • Contact the National Smokers’ Quitline on callsave 1850 201 203 to talk to an advisor
  • Join our YOU CAN QUIT Facebook page, where hundreds of quitters are chatting and giving each other support to get there
  • Contact your GP or Pharmacist, they are a good source of information, advice and support.

How does the HSE give up smoking service work

These services provide information and support to smokers who want or need to give up smoking. They are usually free of charge from your local health service. Smoking cessation advisors are trained to help you give up using a variety of methods. Their advice and support can make a big difference to your success in giving up for good. These services use effective methods such as intensive one-to-one therapy support and group therapy support

An advisor will interview you and:

  1. assess how ready you are to quit,
  2. take your smoking history,
  3. assess your level of nicotine addiction,
  4. measure your carbon monoxide levels,
  5. look at how you can change your behaviour,
  6. provide one-to-one support, and
  7. recommend medical treatments.
