This is a HSE programme of care initiated and provided by professionals, with the aim of preventing illness and promoting good health and development. The Public Health Nursing service is responsible for child health monitoring, which involves a programme of screening interventions and support for parents, starting at birth and extending through the pre-school years. In total there are nine timed age-related visits offered to children under the Child Health Surveillance Screening Programme (CHSS). The Public Health Nursing Service is ideally delivered by a skill mix of PHN’s, Community Registered General Nurses and Health Care Assistants who are based in health centres across community care areas. Their role includes ongoing child, maternal and family health monitoring and provision of home nursing.
