Air quality in Ireland has generally improved in the past two decades, and the large-scale smogs that were so much part of the experience of urban living have been consigned to folk memory. The EHO is responsible for measuring ambient air quality, and controlling air emissions from commercial and industrial sources. Nitrogen dioxide and particulates are the main pollutants of concern. The EHO has extensive legal powers to oblige operators of industrial and commercial premises to take action to reduce air pollution. The EHO also assesses planning proposals with regard to environmental health factors so that there is less risk of air pollution to people living nearby.
