About Us

The Pre-Admission Clinic (PAC) is an out-patient service provided by Sligo General Hospital to assess each individual attending for elective surgery, within three months of the planned procedure. The clinic provides a multidisciplinary assessment and screening service for patients prior to their admission to hospital.  

Aims of the PAC.

The aims of the PAC are to:

Provide a holistic approach to patient care.

• Provide information allowing each patient to make an informed choice regarding surgery.
• Assess medical fitness for surgery and anaesthesia.
• Investigate and treat any newly diagnosed medical condition prior to surgery and anaesthesia.
• Optimise existing medical conditions prior to surgery and anaesthesia.
• Streamline investigations hence maximising effective use of resources.
• Minimise theatre delays by ensuring that all necessary investigations are completed in advance of admission.
• Reduce the length of hospital stay as all pre-operative investigations are completed in the PAC.
• Initiate discharge planning prior to admission for surgery within the multidisciplinary environment of both the acute and primary care services.

 Referral Criteria.

Referral to the PAC is by Consultant, Registrar, Senior House Officer or Intern via the PAC Referral Card. The guidelines for referral to the clinic are as follows:

• All patients > 60 years of age.
• All patients < 60 years of age and > 16 years of age with any of the following co-morbidities:
• Cardiovascular.
• Endocrine.
• Respiratory.
• Renal.
• Obesity.
• Allergies.
• Potential/Previous Anaesthesia Problems.

NOTE: All patients for joint replacement surgery regardless of age must attend the PAC prior to surgery.

The following specialities refer patients awaiting elective surgery to the Pre-Admission Clinic for assessment:

• Orthopaedic.
• Surgery.
• Gynaecology.
• Ent.
• Psychiatry.
