To highlight National No Smoking Day which takes place this Ash Wednesday, February 25th, Galway United FC, as part of their involvement in the European Healthy Stadia Programme, are urging smokers to take the first positive steps towards quitting Norma Cronin, Quitline manager with the Irish Cancer Society explained "Given that smoking is the leading preventable cause of cancer, the Irish Cancer Society places particular emphasis on smoking cessation. The HSE today announced that, as part of its ongoing transformation of services, it is launching a programme to modernise its Medical Laboratory Services. The Medical Laboratory Service currently incorporates 46 laboratories with approximately 3,000 staff and operating costs of €328 million per year. The HSE has today Friday, February 20th, 2009 published the Independent Review of Maternity and Gynaecology Services in the Greater Dublin Area. The publication follows a significant engagement and consultation with the main organisations and representative groups involved in the delivery of maternity and related services across the Dublin Area. The review reflects that Dublin’s current model of stand alone maternity hospitals is not the norm internationally. It is well recognised that for optimal clinical outcomes maternity services should be located with adult acute services. The HSE has today (Thursday, February 12th) welcomed plans announced by the Minister for Health & Children to implement the report of the Commission on Patient Safety and Quality Assurance - "Building a Culture of Patient Safety". The Commission on Patient Safety and Quality Assurance included members from the HSE and its report sets out a vision for safer and higher quality healthcare. The Commission on Patient Safety and Quality Assurance proposes a wide-ranging framework that has the potential to drive sustainable improvement across the whole health system in Ireland. The HSE has worked closely with the Commission in developing this report. The plan announced by the Minister today sets out to ensure that the vision for a safer, better health system is achieved. Many STIs have no signs or symptoms, but they can have devastating consequences for health and fertility if left untreated.
