The Nursing and Midwifery Planning and Development Unit, HSE West (Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary) in collaboration with Kemmy Business School, University of Limerick, have published a pilot evaluation report on clinical leadership development in nursing and midwifery in the Republic of Ireland.
The project was part funded by the National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery (NCNM) and local services.
The report highlights that the model of experiential and work based leadership development utilised within the project, was extremely beneficial in bringing about positive service development and changes in patient care. The report gives an overview of the independently evaluated outcomes achieved across acute and primary, community and continuing care services in the HSE West (Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary).
It recommends the development of co-ordinated approaches for clinical leadership development of front line staff nationally. This pilot has led to the commencement of a National Clinical Leadership Project, part funded by the NCNM and facilitated by the Office of the Nursing Services Director. The project aims to develop a National Framework for Nursing and Midwifery Clinical Leadership Development, through the completion of a needs analysis, development and delivery of a clinical leadership programme, and the development of an evaluation framework.
