Location

Oncology Department, Letterkenny General Hospital, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal. Oncology Day services is located in the Day Services Unit, Floor A. The in-patient ward is located in the main hospital building on Floor B. The Oncology Outpatient clinic is held in the Breast Care Northwest Building at the back of the Hospital.

General Information:

The Oncology team is a team of doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other health care professionals dedicated to the care of an individual with a diagnosis of cancer. Services offered are chemotherapy treatments, assessment for radiotherapy, supportive care treatments, follow-up reviews and psychological support for those with a diagnosis of cancer.

Accessing the Service:

Individuals cannot access the service directly but must be referred to the Oncology team when a diagnosis of cancer has been made. They are referred via a surgeon, physician or in some cases from another hospital or GP practice.  Individuals with cancer who are already known to the Oncology team can contact a member of the Oncology team by telephoning the appropriate person. Alternatively they can ask their GP/PHN to make contact on their behalf.

Cost:

Individuals who are referred to the Oncology team can hold a medical card or be a private or public patient. Costs incurred will be in line with the standard billing arrangements for these three methods of payment.  Telephone contact with any of the oncology nurses, secretaries or attendance at the support groups or with the counselor does not incur any charge.

Routine Opening Hours: 

Oncology Day Services 09.00-17.30 Monday to Friday (excludes bank holidays)

Oncology In-patient ward opens 24/7. Visiting hours are 14.30-16.00 & 18.30- 20.00.Visiting outside these times must be pre-arranged with the Nurse manager or Nurse –in-Charge and limited to family only. Children under the Age of 12 years are not permitted under by prior arrangement and with adult supervision
