A major development involved the construction of a new Emergency Department with associated patient accommodation. This new department opened in June 2010 and comprises distinct assessment and treatment areas for adults including a Minor Injuries Department, a Major Treatment Department and a Resuscitation Area as well as a designated Paediatric Treatment Area. The Emergency Department also has its own dedicated X- Ray facility.

A new Oncology Day Services Unit officially opened at the hospital in 2008 and provides dedicated accommodation for Oncology Patients.

Midwifery Led Units were also established by the hospitals maternity services in 2008 and a major research project was undertaken in collaboration with Trinity College Dublin. The birth of the 1000th baby in the Midwifery Led Units was celebrated in 2009 and the findings of the research programme were published in the report An Evaluation of Midwifery Led Care in HSE North East Area.

The Irish Hospice Foundation established a national programme to mainstream hospice principles in hospital practice.  It focuses on four key themes generated from a pilot project: Integrated Care; Communication; Dignity & Design; Patient Autonomy.
