What do we do?

Pharmaceutical Care

Pharmacists currently provide Clinical Pharmacy Services to:

  • Haematology, Oncology & Palliative Care
  • Patients reviewed under the HCAI Surveillance Initiative

Ward Pharmacy is currently provided to:

  • The Coronary Care Unit
  • The Intensive Care Unit
  • Medical Ward 4
  • The Medical Assessment Unit.

Specialist compounding and dispensing services are provided to:

  • All clinical specialties requiring cytotoxic agents, and other anti-tumour treatments.
  • Patients being treated with clozapine.
  • Patients receiving treatment for tuberculosis

A Senior Phamacist visits a number of wards to monitor and review the prescribing of antibiotics as part of a National Initiative to control infections arising in healthcare institutions and to reduce the development of antibiotic resistance. The hospital also submits data on antibiotic consumption and the usage of disinfectant hand gel to the National Surveillance Office.

Medicines Management

All medicines and other pharmaceutical requirements for the treatment and care of patients at Waterford Regional Hospital, St. Otteran's Hospital and St. Patrick's Hospital are supplied by the pharmacy through pharmacy top-up, ward box and requisitioning services. The pharmacy also provides services for ambulances, community dental clinics and the out-of-hours G.P. on-call services.

The Pharmacy Department introduced the JAC Pharmacy Stock Management Computer System in July 2004, replacing the previous ARAN system. The JAC system is a sophisticated purchasing and distribution system which has functions providing for the "added value" activities of the pharmacy, such as compounding and pre-packing. It is generic name led, enabling close control of the range of products held in pharmacy and guiding cost efficient buying. Its enhanced reporting functions inform the discussions and decision making of the Medicines and Therapeutics Committee and assist development and maintenance of Preferred Prescribing List and Antibiotic Policy Documents.

Clinical Research

Clinical Trials are supported by a Senior Pharmacist who manages all aspects of the handling, storage and monitoring of Investigational Medicinal Products delegated to the pharmacy department. All local trial documentation is created, records are kept and storage environments are under continuous monitoring.
