Physiotherapy

Physiotherapists aim to provide greater quality of life through a client’s physical needs and where possible, provide rehabilitation and independence as well as limit and prevent disability.

Community – based physiotherapists in Mayo provide treatment to both adults and children in a number of different locations throughout the County.

Children’s Service

Children are frequently referred for assessment by their local Public Health Nurse or Doctor.  Referrals are also accepted from other Allied Health Professionals.

Referrals are prioritised according to need.

Clinics for children are held in Swinford, Claremorris, Ballinrobe, Mulranny,Westportand Ballina.

Adult Service

Physiotherapy is provided to Adults in Mayo in a number of locations.   Primary Care Physiotherapists work as part of teams in Achill, Claremorris and Crossmolina.

Physiotherapy Services are offered to Older Persons in Westport,Charlestown, Knock, Swinford, Ballyhaunis, Foxford, Kiltimagh and Claremorris.

Speech and Language Therapy

Speech and Language Therapists work with children and adults who have difficulties with communication (i.e. speech and language) and with eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties.

Speech and Language Therapists work closely with parents and carers and other professionals, such as teachers, Psychologists and Occupational Therapists.

Speech and Language Therapists work mainly in primary care centres and health centres, but some work is carried out in homes, playschools and schools where appropriate.

Referrals are accepted from parents, Public Health Nurses, GPs, teachers and other professionals (with consent). Adults can self-refer.

Speech and Language Therapists work with:

  • Children with developmental delay, physical difficulties, language delay, developmental language disorder, speech disorders, hearing impairment, cleft palate, stammering, autism, voice disorders, selective mutism
  • Adults with communication difficulties following stroke, neurological impairments, degenerative conditions, head injuries, head and neck cancer, voice disorders, stammering, hearing impairments, eating and swallowing difficulties.

Services are provided through Primary Care, Children’s Disability Network Teams, Older Persons Services, and Mental Health.

Community Nutrition & Dietetic Service

The Community Nutrition & Dietetic Service (CNDS) is a community based service that aims to improve the nutritional status of the population of Mayo and to help to reduce the incidence of nutrition-related diseases. This is achieved through a combination of nutrition health promotion and clinical work. The service is provided by Community Dietitians who are members of the Irish Nutrition & Dietetic Institute (INDI).

Chiropody Services

Chiropody Services are available for medical card holders over 65 years. Referrals are made through the Public Health Nurse at your local Health Centre, from your GP or from the Local Health Office.

 

Ophthalmic

Medical Card holders are entitled to Ophthalmic or Eye Testing Services, which you can access by calling (094) 904 2247.
