Letters indicate strength of evidence range from A+ (systematic review) to D (informal opinion). Statins can interact with some antibiotics and increase the risk of rhabdomyolysis. Amiodarone and drugs which prolong the QT interval can interact with many antibiotics. Many antibiotics increase the risk of bleeding with anticoagulants. Comments

  • If ≥ 3 episodes per year, continuous or post-coital prophylaxis with antibiotics can be effective.  However, both are associated with antibiotic side effects. B+
  • Cranberry juice and cranberry products may also be useful.  There is no evidence for the effectiveness of standby antibiotics.
