Infection Prevention and Control

What we do

The prevention and control of infection is taken very seriously at Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown (CHB) and is a key priority for all staff. The Infection Prevention and Control Team work alongside other Healthcare staff to ensure that all measures are taken to reduce and prevent healthcare associated infection.

We have a comprehensive and structured infection prevention programme on site with dedicated specialist staff involved in providing information and advice to healthcare workers, patients and visitors on how best to reduce the risk of healthcare associated infections through education, audit, surveillance, consultation, posters, leaflets and the development of policies/guidelines.

The Infection Prevention and Control Department participate in relevant national strategies and initiatives with the HSE and the Health Protection Surveillance Centre to minimise health care related infections. The Infection Prevention and Control Team consists of Consultant Microbiologists, Clinical Nurse Specialists in Infection Prevention and Control, Surveillance Scientists, an Antimicrobial Pharmacist and also support from biomedical scientists in the microbiology laboratory in CHB.

While it may not be possible to prevent every infection our aim is to provide effective preventive measures including a safe environment and training of staff. We also aim to provide effective and timely treatment and containment of any infection detected.
