Mission statement
To provide quality patient care and to maintain a standard of excellence in the delivery of diagnostic radiological and professional services currently available to patients and clinicians through continuing education and research, recruitment and training and the acquisition of the latest technology.

Where are we?
The general x-ray department is situated on the ground level of University Hospital Waterford. There is a CT suite on the ground floor near the Emergency Dept. and a CT/MRI unit in the basement.

What do we do?
The Department of Radiology at University Hospital Waterford provides a General Diagnostic Imaging Service for the Waterford catchment area and a specialised regional Radiology service for the South Eastern population of over 400,000. The speciality services include Regional Trauma, MRI, Mammography, Radio Isotope Imaging, Ultrasound, CT Cardiac Catheterisation and Interventional Radiology. The Department of Radiology has succeeded in delivering a highly efficient and effective service both within the hospital and for primary and community services. The radiology department staff complement includes Consultant Radiologists, Radiology Registrars, Radiography Services Managers, Clinical Specialist Radiographers, Senior Radiographers, Basic Grade Radiographers, Nurses, Darkroom Technician and Care Attendants.

How to access this service
Referrals are accepted on receipt of a completed and signed request form from a medical practitioner or dentist. Appointments may be made in person or by telephone.

 Our Aim
That all of our work including work using ionising radiation is carried out in a manner which is consistent with good radiation protection practices, in line with the relevant legislation and the conditions of the licence and guidance notes issued by the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland, in a timely and efficient manner

Recent Developments
Under the National Cancer Control Programme, University Hospital Waterford has been selected as one of 8 designated specialist cancer centres for breast cancer, which has resulted in a major reconfiguration of our breast imaging service. There are plans for similar changes regarding lung and prostate services.
