Connecting for Life - Galway, Mayo & Roscommon

CFL_FullCol_Landscape_Gal_Mayo_Rosc

Over the years many people in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon have either been directly or indirectly affected by suicide, which has a devastating effect on families and the community. Connecting for Life is Ireland’s national strategy to reduce suicide 2015–2020. It sets out the Irish Government’s vision for suicide prevention, the expected outcomes over the next five years and the actions that will be taken to prevent suicide and self-harm in Ireland.

The HSE, in partnership with community, voluntary and statutory organisations, is developing a Suicide Prevention Action Plan for Counties Galway, Mayo and Roscommon. This plan will be based on the same vision, goals, objectives and measurable outcomes as the national strategy. A Steering Committee and working groups have been set up to develop this plan. The planning process  comprises the following four key phases, and as of July 2017, we are now in Phase 3:

Phase 1: Consultation process

An extensive consultation process was undertaken over a four month period from March to June 2017. Its primary objectives were to:

  • Raise awareness of the Galway, Mayo and Roscommon Suicide Prevention Action Plan
  • Gather the views of individuals, community groups, voluntary groups and statutory agencies in the region on how to reduce suicide and self-harm
  • Identify the priority areas for action in reducing suicide and self-harm.

A number of consultation methods were used, which included:

  • An online survey available in both English and Irish
  • A written survey available in both English and Irish
  • Focus group consultations.

The Steering Committee would like to sincerely thank everyone who took the time to complete and return the survey. We would also like to thank those who gave of their time to help organise, attend and contribute to focus groups.

Phase 2: Analysis

A total of 1,265 people completed the survey. In addition, 19 focus groups were held. This high response rate reflects the strong interest and support in this topic in our area. About Face, an external agency carried out an analysis of the feedback. The key themes to emerge were categorised and aligned with national strategic goals in Connecting for Life.

Phase 3: Preparation of an action plan

Following completion of the analysis, a draft action plan has now been written and is currently being reviewed by members of the Steering Committee and working groups. We would like to include a number of photographs in our final action plan. We are now running a photographic competition to source these. This is an opportunity to continue to create an awareness of the ongoing work in relation to suicide prevention in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon. The details of the photo competition are as follows:
