‘Every Breastfeed Makes A Difference’

National Breastfeeding Week

National Breastfeeding Week takes place from the 1st to the 7th of October 2017 and is being marked by a number of special events and regular advice clinics at UL Hospitals Group and in the MidWest.

Continuing the theme ‘Every Breastfeed Makes a Difference’ we want to let mum, dads, expectant parents and their families and friends know about the breastfeeding supports that are provided around the country and spread the message that:

  • Every breastfeed makes a difference
  • Breastfeeding is important for the health of children and mothers, and the evidence is now stronger than ever (Victora et al, Lancet, 2016)
  • There is a wide range of support available
  • We’re here with help, information and support through health services, support groups, and on‐line via www.breastfeeding.ie

Margaret Quigley, Director of Midwifery, UL Hospitals Group, commented:

“National Breastfeeding Week provides a great opportunity to promote the importance of breastfeeding, to provide information on breastfeeding supports and to promote breastfeeding as the normal and healthy way to feed babies and young children. The message for this national campaign, of which UL Hospitals is very proud to be a part, is ‘Every Breastfeed makes a Difference’. Ireland has some catching up to do with our European neighbours in respect of our breastfeeding rates and events like those being put on this week really help in removing the obstacles and social stigmas around breastfeeding.”
