National Hospitals Office

FactFile Small Image

The NHO is responsible for the strategic management of acute hospital services for the country. It is lead by a national Director who reports to the CEO and collaborates closely with the Directors of Population Health and Primary, Community and Continuing Care. The Director oversees the implementation of the hospital section of the annual Service Plan which is to be fulfilled in the delivery of services by hospital networks, managed through contractual agreements between each of the networks and the NHO. The Director of the NHO contributes to assessment of needs of the population, the identification of priorities, the development of acute hospital policies and plans to translate policy into action.

The Director is supported by four assistant national directors, with responsibility for Planning & Development, Quality & Risk, Contracts & Utilisation and Pre-Hospital Emergency Care as well as the Director of the national ambulance service. In each case the role of these Assistant Directors spans all acute hospital services.

One of the key priorities under the HSE's Transformation Plan is the need to reconfigure hospital services. In this regard the NHO has embarked on an ambitious programme of reviews which will inform national as well as regional planning.
