Dr Barry White, the HSE's National Director of Quality and Clinical Care and Dr Risteárd Ó Laoide, Consultant Radiologist at St Vincent's Hospital, Dean of the Faculty of Radiologists and recently appointed national lead for radiology, along with other senior HSE executives will attend Tallaght Hospital today (Weds. 10th March) to ensure that the processes underway to review outstanding x-rays are operating to maximum capacity.

The HSE is aware of the planned process underway at Tallaght Hospital to deal with the backlog of 57,921 adult x-rays to ensure that these x-rays are read by a Consultant Radiologist.

HSE South wishes to clarify the position in relation to the placement of children with families in Cork city as referred to in an article in today’s Sunday Business Post. The article refers to an internal audit about payments to registered foster families and families with whom a child has been placed and who are undergoing formal assessment.

A celebration event for a novel Drug and Alcohol project in three Inishowen schools was held in Carndonagh, Co. Donegal recently. The ‘Boxed In’ initiative saw seven senior cycle students, some of them Donegal Youth Councillors, trained as peer facilitators who then presented an Alcohol and Drug Awareness Session to First Year students. At the end of the project, parents, teachers, principals, local councillors and elected representatives attended a presentation of certificates to the young people.

The “Choose Life-Reach Out” group in Co. Mayo is currently running an art competition for schools in the area to re-design a Support Card for the “Choose Life- Reach Out” campaign. The art competition is open to 13 to 18 year olds to redesign a support card and flyer for public circulation, and the launch of the new card/flyer and winner will be announced at a public information evening on Positive Mental Health in Challenging Times in the Downhill Hotel, Ballina on the 30th of April.

A number of queries have been submitted to us in relation to specific issues. While I understand we have responded in writing, you may have further queries which we would be happy to deal with as best we can today.
I would like to make reference to the HSE’s financial performance in 2008.
2008 was a very challenging year. It demanded a very rigorous and continued focus on cost containment, cost reduction and achieving better value for money. If staff had not achieved the success they did in these areas we would have been unable to met the service targets as set out in the National Service Plan 2008.

The Community Nutrition & Dietetic Service of HSE West is advising parents to encourage their children to make healthy lifestyle choices every day. Recent research from the WHO Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative found that 26% of girls and 18% of boys aged 7 are overweight or obese. Ann Marie Lydon, Senior Community Dietitian with the Community Nutrition & Dietetic Service, HSE West says that “childhood obesity is strongly associated with risk factors for heart disease and diabetes, underachievement at school and lower self esteem. We also know that over 60% of children who are overweight before puberty will be overweight in early adulthood.”

The annual World Kidney Day is coming up again on March 11th and is an opportunity for everyone to learn more about our amazing kidneys.
On March 11th staff from the renal, diabetes and dietetics departments in Sligo General Hospital together with members of the Irish Kidney Association will be giving information to the general public in the Tesco Arcade in Sligo between 11am and 3pm. All are welcome to come along.
