Water and Health

The quality of water, whether used for drinking, domestic purposes, food production or recreation has an important impact on health.  Poor quality water can cause illness and infectious disease outbreaks.

The role of different agencies, such as the Environmental Protection Agency, Local Authorities, Irish Water and private drinking water providers is outlined in drinking water and bathing water legislation.  The Health Service Executive has a specific legislative role in assessing risk, agreeing remedial actions and providing health advice in relation to drinking water and bathing water.

Other health legislation such as infectious disease and food safety regulations are also relevant.
