Building a Better Health Service

Values in Action 1 year old in the Mid West

Values in Action began one year ago in the Mid-West as a partnership between the UL Hospital Group and Mid-West Community Healthcare. It started with 170 Champions at our first Health Service Bootcamp on October 26th 2016. Fast forward 12 months and we now have a community of 478 champions in the Mid West and 444 Champions representing our national divisions. Our aim was to create better workplaces for our staff and to deliver better experiences to those who use our services.

As one of our champions puts it, It’s for ourselves and it’s for our patients”.

Our champions took the knowledge they learned at Bootcamp to multiply with their peers. They ran events to explain the behaviours and the difference they could make for us in our workplaces and for our patients and service users. Whether in Mid West Community Healthcare or UL Hospitals Group, champions took every opportunity to spread the Values in Action behaviours in Limerick, Clare and north Tipperary.

Watch Bernard Gloster, Chief Officer, Mid West Community Healthcare and Colette Cowan, CEO, UL Hospitals Group reflect on the 1st year of Values in Action.

Champions spoke at the Healthcare Leaders Masterclass about the difference the 9 behaviours have made in their workplace and in how they deliver care to patients and service users. Against the backdrop of the positive impact in the Mid-West, the HSE with the support of the Director General, has established a team to bring Values in Action to other parts of the organisation. We have identified over 400 champions from within the National Divisions who will be leading this culture change at the centre of the organisation.

Our champions say it best:

It doesn’t matter whether you are in admin or on the frontline, whether you are sweeping the floors or running the organisation everyone can adopt these behaviours easily through self-reflection and contribute to improving experiences for staff and clients on a daily basis.

Kathryn Considine, Physiotherapist, Mid-West Community Healthcare.

For something that has never been done before in the health service, we’ve made a great impact in a short space of time.
Thank you to all of our Mid-West Champions for living the behaviours, multiplying and playing your part in building a culture in the health service we can all be proud of.
