Rehabilitation Medicine Programme Progress

Rehabilitation is a dynamic and critical component of the therapeutic continuum and one that is essential if patients are to regain or maintain their life roles and quality of life after serious illness or injury. The NCRPM seeks to collaborate with key stakeholders across the HSE to ensure integration;

The NCPRM Clinical Advisory Group (CAG) is a physician group representing the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) and its Chair is a Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine. The CAG provides a forum for strategic vision and clinical input into the planning process of the work of the programme.

The NCPRM Working Group comprises representatives from rehabilitation-related professional bodies and patient advocacy groups.

Trauma Services

The NCPRM was represented on the DoH / HSE Steering Group and working groups to develop the Trauma System for Ireland Report published in 2018 (PDF, 3.2 MB, 145 pages), and the clinical lead is also a member of the Trauma Review Implementation Group.  Regular communication is maintained between both the NCRPM and National Office for Trauma Services.

The Neuro-Rehabilitation Strategy

The NCPRM’s Model of Care and The National Strategy & Policy for the Provision of Neuro-Rehabilitation Services in Ireland (2011) are integrally linked. As such, effective implementation of the Neuro-Rehabilitation Strategy is a key priority for the NCPRM.  The NCPRM Clinical Lead is Co-Chair of the Neuro-Rehabilitation Strategy Steering Group and the NCPRM has a close working relationship with the Neuro-Rehabilitation Strategy programme managers.

The National Rehabilitation Hospital

In Ireland, the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) provides a comprehensive range of specialist rehabilitation services to patients who, as a result of an accident, illness or injury have acquired a physical or cognitive disability and require a programme of complex specialist rehabilitation. All clinical programmes in the NRH are accredited by Commission for Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

The NCPRM maintains close connections with the NRH, and many members of the NCPRM CAG and Working Group are employees of the NRH.
