Introduction to Quality Improvement

This Introduction to Quality Improvement will introduce you to the core concepts of quality improvement in healthcare and will help you think about how you can play an active role in improving quality in line with the Framework for Improving Quality.

Who, What and How?

Who is it for?

Anyone working in health and social care services including service user and patient representatives who are interested in learning about quality improvement.

How long will it take?

This is an e-learning programme that can be taken at a time and place that suits you. Typically it will take approximately 30 minutes to complete but because it is an e-learning programme you can stop and start the programme whenever you like and you will be able to pick up where you left off.

How do I access it?

Simply log onto the HSE’s online learning portal at www.hseland.ie. If you are already registered, login and search for ‘Introduction to Quality Improvement.’ If you are new to HSeLanD, select ‘create an account’ and follow the registration instructions.

What will I learn?

During this programme you will learn about:

  1. What Quality Improvement means in line with healthcare standards.
  2. How staff and anyone who uses our health services can get involved in improvement work.
  3. How improvement can be supported by the application of the Framework for Improving Quality.
  4. How a staff member and patient got involved in quality improvement and how you too can play an active role in improving your service.
  5. Where to look for support to continue your QI learning journey.
Is the programme accredited?

The programme has received category 1 approval from the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland and learners will be awarded 1 CEU upon completion. It has also been awarded 1 CPD point by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.

Level 1: Foundation in Quality Improvement

This Level 1 Foundation in Quality Improvement will help you to develop an understanding and of the fundamentals of quality improvement in healthcare and will guide you in identifying the knowledge and skills you need to further your learning.

Anyone working in health and social care services including service user and patient representatives who are interested in learning about quality improvement.

How long will it take?

This is an e-learning programme that can be taken at a time and place that suits you. Typically it will take approximately 3 hours to complete but because it is an e-learning programme you can stop and start the programme whenever you like and you will be able to pick up where you left off.

What will I learn?

  3. How we partner with people who use services.
  4. What staff engagement is and how our actions can impact others.
  5. The variety of tools used to improve quality.
  6. How important data and measurement are in improvement work.
  7. How structures, processes, oversight and accountability are key to improvement.
Is the programme accredited?

The programme has received category 1 approval from the Nurse & Midwifery Board of Ireland and 3 CPD points by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.

Level 2: Quality Improvement in Practice

This Level 2 QI in Practice aims to develop the knowledge and skills of those actively involved in delivering quality improvements as part of a team.

Who, What and How?

Who is it for?

Teams working in health and social care services including service user and patient representatives have an improvement idea or project that they would like to develop.

How long will it take?

This programme will run over a 20 [SH1] week period and consists of a blended learning approach. Participants will be required to complete a number of e-learning modules, attended virtual webinars and project clinics as well as develop their quality improvement idea into a QI project which will be showcased at the end of the programme.

How do I access it?

Teams (3-4 people) should register their interest by contacting the School of QI at national.schoolofqi@hse.ie. You will be sent a registration form and contacted by a member of our team.

What will I learn?

During this programme you will learn about:

  1. The importance of applying the six drivers of the Framework for Improving Quality to QI work.
  2. How to plan and deliver a quality improvement project.
  3. Ways to actively partner with those who use our health services in QI work.
  4. How to engage key stakeholders.
  5. How to use of a variety of QI methods and tools for improvement
  6. Use measurement and data to verify that a change has resulted in an improvement.
  7. How important structures and processes are to the delivery and sustainability of QI work
Is the programme accredited?

The programme has received 6 CPD points per module from the Nurse & Midwifery Board of Ireland and 42 CPD points by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.

Level 3: Quality Improvement Leadership Programme

Formerly the Diploma in Leadership and Quality in Healthcare, the new RCPI Post Graduate Certificate in Quality Improvement Leadership is a one year programme is funded for HSE employees by the National Quality and Patient Safety Directorate (NQPSD). The programme is accredited at level 9 with the National Quality Framework for the attainment of a minimum of 30 ECTS credits.

Who, What and How?

What is the aim of this programme?

This is a team- and project-based learning programme, designed to provide learners with leading edge knowledge and skills in aspects of quality improvement, implementation science, patient safety and enhanced leadership capacity. The programme is a key implementation support for the HSE Patient Safety Strategy 2019-2024 in facilitating healthcare teams to identify and address the common causes of harm.

The programme is designed to enable your team to become champions of change in healthcare. The expert faculty will share their cutting edge knowledge and skills in all aspects of quality improvement, implementation science, patient safety and enhanced leadership capacity.

Who is it for?

This programme is fully funded by the National Quality and Patient Safety Directorate, therefore it is free for all teams (3-4 people) working in the HSE who are accepted onto the course.

Teams should be multidisciplinary and have appropriate expertise related to the quality improvement project area. For example, a medication safety team should include at least two disciplines, e.g. a doctor, pharmacist and midwife.

How long will it take?

This programme is delivered using blended learning, a flexible way of completing the course that combines online educational materials and opportunities for interaction online with traditional place-based classroom methods.

The programme is delivered over 10 months and will include approximately 7 full-day in-person sessions, 5 full-day virtual classroom sessions and a series of virtual team calls. All in-person sessions will be held in RCPI, No. 6 Kildare Street, Dublin.

Is the programme accredited?

The programme is accredited at level 9 with the National Quality Framework for the attainment of a minimum of 30 ECTS credits.
