Review of education and training needs of nurses working with children and adolescents with mental health problems accessing mental health care services nationally.
The Office of the Nursing & Midwifery Services in the HSE in partnership with service users and all of the stakeholders involved in mental health care nationally developed a national nursing strategy. This Nursing Strategy provides direction for the further development of the role of the Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse in the Irish mental health services. It will strengthen both nursing leadership and practice within a client centred, community based, recovery orientated multidisciplinary team based environment.
The strategy will support a standardisation and consistency of approach within psychiatric nursing practice nationally and it sets out a clear and informed road map for the profession for the years ahead to respond to service users and family needs.
The national wound care guidelines project was commissioned in mid 2007 by Mr. Aiden Browne, then Director of Primary Care Continuing Care within the Health Service Executive.
With the publication of its Transformation Programme, 2007-2010 in 2006 the Health Service Executive (HSE) set itself the goal of achieving six transformation priorities, one of which (Programme 4) was the implementation of a model for the prevention and management of chronic illness (p14). Diabetes mellitus was identified as one such illness, the incidence of which continues to increase nationally and internationally. The health risks associated with diabetes are well known, and for women with pre-existing diabetes these may include an increased risk of miscarriage, foetal anomalies and pre-term labour.
Following a recommendation from the Report of the Group to Review the Structure and Organisation of Prison Healthcare services (Olden Report) the Nursing & Midwifery Planning & Development unit Palmerstown undertook this national project in partnership with the Irish Prison Service (IPS).
Nurses were recruited to the Irish Prison Service (IPS) in a full time capacity in 1999 and to date there are 117 nurses employed nationally in the Irish Prison Service. The purpose of this work was to inform how nurses working within the Irish Prison Service can maximise their contribution to prisoner healthcare. This report identified prisoner health needs and examined these against the current provision of healthcare by nurses employed in the prison system.
The new PHIT paper based system is introduced to nurses in induction sessions in LHO, DNC is included
in ongoing training sessions and is delivered to post graduate students in the local third-level education
institute. Managers working with this new system sit on local Health Service Executive (HSE) community
nursing interview boards and have increased awareness of the skill mix necessary to respond to health
needs in their areas.
