Return to Nursing and Midwifery Practice

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) recommends that a registered nurse or midwife who is returning to practice after an absence of five years or more should undertake a Return to Practice programme prior to practicing as a nurse or midwife.  The participant must be on the Active Register or eligible to apply to register with the NMBI. Return to Nursing and Midwifery programmes must be approved by the NMBI.  Clinical placements must take place in a healthcare institution approved by NMBI.

Current Return to Nursing Practice programmes for General, Children’s, Mental Health, Intellectual Disability and Public Health Nursing and Return to Midwifery Practice programmes are six-twelve weeks in duration. These programmes are provided to enable nurses and midwives to update both their theoretical knowledge and their clinical skills.
