IPC precautions and PPE requirements when administering vaccines

Infection Prevention & Control precautions and PPE requirements when administering vaccines in the context of the Covid 19 pandemic (all intramuscular vaccines and intranasal influenza vaccine)

Administering vaccines to adults and children is a clean task with low intensity physical contact.

As regards the PPE required to administer vaccines, a surgical face mask is sufficient for staff to carry out this clinical activity, as per guidance from the Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control (AMRIC) Division of the Health Protection Surveillance Centre. This applies to all vaccines, including intranasal live attenuated influenza vaccine.
