Mental Health Services in Donegal

It is estimated that one in four of us will experience some mental health problems in our lifetime, from a low period, to more serious depression, to a small number who will experience severe mental health problems. If you feel persistently sad, have trouble sleeping or experience unexplained aches and pains, you should visit your GP for some advice. Most people are treated by the GP alone, unless more support, for example, therapy services, is required, in which case you may be referred to some of the following day and hospital services.

Psychology Service

As part of the public service provided by the HSE, Psychologists in Donegal see adults and children who present with a wide variety of emotional, relationship and behavioural problems stemming from many different causes.Psychological factors play an important role in many conditions of both mental and physical ill health and may also adversely impact on emotional well being. Typical examples of the type of problems that prompt people to come to see us include, depression, anxiety, trauma, abuse, disability.

Psychologists carry out assessment, diagnostic and intervention work including developmental assessments, ASD diagnosis, psychotherapeutic and behavioural interventions.

Psychologists also provide a consultation and advice service to the public as well as HSE and other agencies' staff .

As well as working in the psychology department, a number of psychologists are based in multi -disciplinary teams, such as mental health and early intervention disability teams.

Referral to the service
You can refer yourself or your child directly to the service either by letter or phone call. Equally, you can ask your GP or other health professional whom you attend to do so on your behalf. Once the referral is accepted, your name or that of your child is placed on the waiting list of that part of the service based closest to where you live. Referrals are prioritized on the waiting list according to the seriousness of the problem, therefore the more information which can be provided initially, the better able we will be to decide on its priority. Referrals may not be accepted because there is a more appropriate service available that deals with the problems with which you are concerned. If that is the case, you will be informed of that and how to contact the service in question.
