Within this state, the Registers of Birth, Marriage, Civil Partnership and Death are public records, and where the life event has been registered within the timeframe outlined, and sufficient relevant information is given by the applicant, a certificate can be purchased online for a statutory fee. This is commonly called a cert or certificate of a life event.
All certs are issued on an A4 sheet, the terms 'long' and 'short-form' refer to certificates that used to be issued in the past.

The Registers of Domestic Adoption and Stillbirth are held by the Office of the General Register and where the life event has been registered and sufficient relevant information is given by the applicant, a certificate can be purchased online for a statutory fee. Please note that Inter-country Adoption records are held by the Adoption Board and they should be contacted in relation to obtaining copies of these records. Please note that Inter-country Adoption Certificates are not available through this website at this time.
Each certificate costs €20. There is an additional fee of €1 for postage within the Republic of Ireland and United Kingdom and €2 for postage elsewhere.
Your Credit/Debit card will be debited on the day of purchase by the Civil Registration Service unless otherwise stated.

Where an application is made for an adoption or stillbirth certificate these will be processed and shipped from the General Registrar's Office, Convent Road, Roscommon. Please note, orders containing an application for an adoption or stillbirth certificate will be processed by the General Registrar's Office. They can be contacted by telephone at: 0906 632900

Applications are processed as quickly as possible. We aim to ship from our office within 10 days, please bear in mind that postal services vary from country to country. To ensure the record is found please ensure all relevant information is submitted.
Where a record cannot be accessed (for example, due to insufficient information being provided) we may contact you by email or telephone to clarify your application and avoid any undue delay to you. When applying, it is helpful to include email and telephone details for this purpose.
On rare occasions records are not available (for example the event may not have been registered) and in these cases a refund may be made.
The Civil Registration Service will make a decision on any refund application to it by a customer on the merits of each case. We will endeavour to have a fair and equitable system on dealing with refunds. The final outcome on any refund application will rest with the Civil Registration Service – Eastern Registration Area. However if you are unhappy with any decision you can make an appeal to the Office of the Ombudsman.
Certificates are posted using normal post, no responsibility is taken for items which go missing en route. The length of time it takes before delivery varies depending on the search and duration of postage.
Payment is made using a hosted Data Processor via a secure online payment system.
