Adult Mental Health Unit, Mayo General Hospital

The Adult Mental Health Unit in Mayo General Hospital was opened on 1st December 2003 and provides a comprehensive quality service to those experiencing acute mental illness and their relatives. The delivery of care and treatment will be based on the belief that each individual should be treated and cared for in such a way as to promote their independence and encourage personal responsibility consistent with their needs and abilities. The accommodation in the Unit includes 32 beds and a seclusion area. All five sectors within the Mayo Mental Health Service as well as Psychiatry of Old Age, have access to these beds.

Day Centre, Sacred Heart Hospital

The Centre caters for up to 15 patients as part of the rehabilitation programme in a non-acute setting at the Sacred Heart Hospital, Castlebar.

 

The Fairways, Swinford

The Fairways was commissioned on the 3rd of September 2001. This is a new residential facility situated in the Aras Attracta Complex. It comprises of three bungalows which caters for 21 residents. These residents were previously long-stay patients in St. Mary’s Psychiatric Hospital, Castlebar.  Two consultants provide medical cover to the service, the consultant for the Sector 4 area and the consultant attached to the Psychiatry of Older Age Department.   

Residents have access to activities which include Aromatherapy, Art, Beauty Therapy, Carols, Domestic and Household Work, Group outings, Individual Outings to Home Settings, Picnic, reading papers and magazines, Reality orientation, Reminisce therapy, Telly Bingo, Use of the pool, gym and snoozling, walking and golf.

 

Teach Aisling

The Unit is a purpose-built High Support Hospital in the Mayo Mental Health Services. It is situated just outside of Castlebar in close proximity to other mental health services for example, Rural Training Centre, Castlebar Training Centre and the Pitch and Putt Course. The unit opened on 18th December 2003. It is a self-contained unit with accommodation for 10 residents and with two adjoining flatlets. Eight of the residents have single rooms with en-suite facilities and the remaining two share a twin room, also with en-suite facilitate.   All of the residents in the unit have serious and enduring mental health problems.

 

An Coillin Continuing Care Unit (formerly St. Theresa’s Unit) on the grounds of the old St. Mary’s Hospital

This unit is used to accommodate 50 patients (the majority are former patients from St. Mary’s) and there is a combination of male and female patients. Within this figure there are 40 long-stay beds and 10 rehabilitation Unit. This 10 bedded Unit has specialised rehabilitation resources and will be used to facilitate younger patients who will then be discharged either home or to other areas of the Mental Health Services. This Rehabilitation Unit also has the services of a Consultant specialising in rehabilitative care.

Psychiatry of Old Age Service

Old Age Psychiatry is a recognised speciality which is concerned with the assessment and treatment of mental disorders arising for the first time over the age of 65-years. 

The service is community orientated, assessing, diagnosing and treating people in their own homes, which is also the patient’s preference.  St. Anne’s Unit in the Sacred Heart Hospital a 25 bedded residential unit caters for people with challenging behaviour associated with dementia.   In this unit assessment, interim care, continuing care and limited respite care to people who can not be managed elsewhere because of behavioural problems is provided. This service has access to beds in the Adult Mental Health Unit and Fairways in Swinford for people with severe functional illness.

Ballina Mental Health Services HQ

Ballina and its environment as you are aware has a population of roughly 25,000 people. Services are concentrated and delivered from a site shared with the District Hospital, Outpatient Clinic, Westdoc, Ambulance base and Training Centre.

Westport Mental Health Centre

Westport Mental Health Centre is a community based mental health service which serves the needs of those individuals, who have mental health problems.  This service is provided by a multi-disciplinary team of skilled professionals who combine their unique expertise to provide integrated care to service users in the context of their local community.

Claremorris Mental Health Centre

Claremorris Mental Health Centre is also a community based mental health service which serves the needs of people in the south and east Mayo area.  Assessment and treatment in the Day Centre is a combination of therapeutic “group” orientated approach, a “one to one” counselling approach and a medical approach.  A weekly clinic is held at the Day Centre where clients are seen by the Consultant or NCHD.

Springdale HQ, Claremorris

Springdale House is the Sector Headquarters in Claremorris where the multi-disciplinary team have their offices and see patients on appointment.  All referrals to Claremorris, Kiltimagh and Swinford come through Springdale headquarters.   There are two full-time Community Mental Health Nurses based at Springdale House providing nursing care for people experiencing a range of mental health problems living in the community. Addiction Counselling, Occupational Therapy, Psychology, Social Work, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Massage Therapy and a Writers’ Group are some of the activities in Springdale House.

Ballinrobe Mental Health Centre

Ballinrobe Mental Health Centre is again a community-based service serving an area stretching from Ballinrobe to Shrule and the general area around Lough Mask.  Daily multidisciplinary team clinics are held at the Centre and clients commute to and from there on a daily basis.  Close links are maintained with the General Practitioners and Community Groups in the Ballinrobe area.

O'Hara Mental Health Centre, Kiltimagh

The O’Hara Mental Health Centre is situated in the centre of Kiltimagh town.  The aim of the O’Hara Centre is to promote and enhance the physical, mental, social and emotional health of all clients.  The multi-disciplinary team meets weekly to discuss ongoing clients and new referrals.  Activities in the centre include advocacy, art, anxiety management, creative writing, health promotion, holistic massage, supportive counselling, art & reminiscence and drop-in centre.
