About Rheumatology

Rheumatology is the specialty of medicine that is devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic diseases. Rheumatology problems involve joints, soft tissues and connective tissues. There are approximately 200 types of rheumatology conditions, including Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Lupus, Gout, Osteoarthritis and Osteoporosis.

About us

The department, through its multidisciplinary team of medical and nursing staff provides holistic care to patients with arthritis-related diseases, offering treatments that alleviate pain, maintain or improve joint mobility, help prevent disease progression and damage, while promoting self management for patients and their families.

At our site in Croom there is an infusion unit. Our dedicated rheumatology Clinical Nurse Specialists are also based in Croom. Patients from all sites receive specialist therapies in a dedicated day ward here. This facility also includes infusion services, access to patient information, disease and drug intervention, ultrasound scanning and a research programme.

The triage of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists are also based in Croom, many patients are referred to this service.



New referrals for rheumatology clinics are triaged on all sites which include University Hospital Limerick, Ennis Hospital, Nenagh Hospital and Croom Hospital.Submitted letters are assessed by the Consultant and an appropriate appointment will be forwarded directly to the patient.
