Children’s Ark School


Children’s Ark School is a Department of Education and Skills school, catering for the on-going education of children, from the ages of 4 to 19, in University Hospital Limerick.

The school provides multi-denominational primary and secondary level education for students attending University Hospital Limerick. The school comprises a large classroom for primary students, a second classroom for secondary students, toilets, office space and an outdoor learning area.

The Department of Education and Skills has installed 100MB fibre broadband to enable access to the most up to date technology to support the education of the students.

The school is managed by a Board of Management and has three teachers. Mary Carr and Margaret McCarthy are the primary teachers and Olive Dillon is the post-primary teacher. All teachers are members of HOPE, the organisation for hospital teachers in Europe.

The school's ethos is that 'no child in the Mid West will be at a disadvantage educationally if in UL Hospital'.


  • The Primary and Post Primary curriculum are covered.
  • A music therapist has a session in the classroom once a week.
  • Art and craft, cooking and science workshops etc. are included in the programme.

School hours

The usual school hours are observed.

  • 9.00am to 12.00 - Classroom session: All children considered medically fit are welcome to attend.
  • After lunch - teachers work with students who are unable to come to the classroom, at the bed-side.

Frequent day admission patients in the Caterpillar Wardmay also avail of the service.

Note: Second level students throughout UL hospital may avail of the educational service by contacting the school on 061 485303. The school is a Dept of Education and Skills school. This service is available at the student’s bedside.  State exams are catered for.
