Department of Pathology, UL Hospitals Group

The Department of Pathology of the UL Hospitals Group has laboratories located at University Hospital Limerick, Ennis Hospital, Nenagh Hospital and St. Johns Hospital. They provides a diagnostic and consultative service for the hospitals within the UL Hospitals group as well as GPs’. The laboratory service provided at each hospital site is outlined in the respective hospital Laboratory User Manual.  The manuals give an overview of the services provided at the respective hospital laboratories, test repertoire (listed alphabetically), contact details for key Laboratory personnel, hours of operation and laboratory requirements.

The Laboratories of the Pathology department have extensive internal quality assurance system and participate in external quality assessment schemes. The Laboratories strive to be accredited by the Irish National Accreditation Board (INAB) and be compliant with the International Standard titled “Medical Laboratories Particular Requirements for Quality and Competency” (ISO 15189). The Laboratory at Ennis Hospital provides a limited Clinical Biochemistry and Haematology service to hospital ‘in patients’ and outpatient clinics and to General Practitioners in County Clare.

Nenagh Hospital (STAT Laboratory)

Nenagh Laboratory

The  Laboratory services for Nenagh Hospital consist of an ‘on-site’ STAT Laboratory  to accommodate Hospital ‘in-patients’ i.e. Hospital Wards, OPD, LIU and Clinics, requiring Biochemistry and Haematology tests.

Microbiology – Public Health Laboratory, HSE Building, Ballycummin Avenue, Raheen Business Park, Limerick

The Public Health laboratory provides testing facilities for food, water and environmental samples taken by Environmental Health Officers under the direction of the Health Service Executive Mid Western Area. The laboratory accepts water samples for microbiological analysis directly from members of the public. The laboratory is accredited by The Irish National Accreditation Board (INAB) to International Standard ISO/IEC 17025:2005 “General Requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories”.

St. Johns Hospital
