About Us

The Oral and Maxillofacial Department at University Hospital Limerick provides diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the mouth and facial structures. It has associations with both dentistry and medicine. Our department is based at University Hospital Limerick, Dooradoyle

The Oral and Maxillofacial Department is an Outpatient Clinic and day surgery facility, caring for patients attending for consultation and day case surgical procedures which includes Minor Oral surgical conditions and Facial /Neck Lesions.

The Department is a surgical/dental discipline which deals with the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of conditions arising on the face, in the jaws and salivary glands. The aim of the speciality is to provide comprehensive diagnostic and surgical treatment in a multidisciplinary manner.

Patients can be seen on the referral of a general dental or medical practitioner or on the request of a specialist or Consultant.

The Department is currently staffed by one Oral and Maxillofacial Consultant Surgeon Mr Michael Gilbride, who has established expertise and interest in the specialist areas of Head and Neck Cancers , Salivary Gland disease and Orthognathic Surgery.

Outpatient Services

We provide outpatient service two days per week in the University Hospital Limerick and an outpatient service every Monday morning in Nenagh Hospital, the following service is provided for patients:

  • Review appointments following Local procedures i.e. suture removal and wound review
  • Follow up care and procedures following in-patient surgery
  • Wound Care
  • Review of patients seen in Emergency Departments in UHL, St Johns, Nenagh and Ennis
  • New reviews regarding Dental extraction for impacted wisdom teeth
  • New reviews for Facial Lesions.
  • TMJ Disorders
  • Facial Fractures
  • Oral Cancers

The Oral and Maxillofacial Unit is located on the ground floor of the hospital. On driving through the main entrance of the hospital, the department is located to one’s right with its own display sign.
