About us
The Department of Trauma Orthopaedics within University Hospitals Limerick (UHL) provides diagnosis and treatment for injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system. Our department is based at the University Hospital Limerick, Dooradoyle site. A full range of comprehensive paediatric and adult emergency trauma services are provided including day surgery and complex in-patient surgery.
The department benefits from a consultant body with established expertise and interests in the sub-specialist areas of upper limb, foot and ankle, spinal surgery, secondary trauma limb reconstruction and musculoskeletal tumours. Care in the department is multidisciplinary, led by six consultant surgeons alongside surgical staff, surgical trainees, nursing staff with a specialist qualification and skills in orthopaedic & trauma nursing, orthopaedic clinical nurse managers, clinical nurse specialists and allied health care professionals.
The department is fully accredited as a centre for the training of specialists in orthopaedic and trauma surgery by the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland and clinical placements for nursing students undertaking degree programmes in University Limerick.

Inpatient Services
Adult in-patient care and services are delivered from the Trauma Ward. The ward is managed and care is co-ordinated by clinical nurse managers, registered general nurses, health care assistants, allied health care professionals, household attendants and porters.
The philosophy of care endeavours that all patients are treated as individuals and on admission will be involved in the development of a plan to meet the patients own specific physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs. Participation in care and discharge planning and setting realistic goals should involve the patients and their families’ where appropriate. The aim is provide a safe friendly environment for patients and staff where dignity and confidentially is maintained at all times. We make every effort to promote independence where possible and provide the necessary education and supports to patients and families on discharge. Nursing in partnership with other members of the multidisciplinary team on Trauma Ward aim to provide high quality patient centred care which is based on best practice, evidenced based research and that is responsive to the patients we encounter.
Outpatient Services
The following out-patient adult and paediatric services are delivered from out-patients suite 2:
- Acute fracture management following referral from a Local Injuries Unit or Emergency Department
- Follow up care and procedures following in-patient surgery
- Wound care, plaster casting, removal of wires
- Application of immobilisation aids
- Pre-assessment & education of secondary trauma patients requiring limb reconstruction procedures
- Access to out-patients physiotherapy services

Location
Out-patients Suite 2 is on the ground floor in the out-patients building. In-patient services are delivered from Trauma Ward which is located on the second floor in the main hospital building, with paediatric patients catered for in Sunshine Ward.
Access to Service
Out-side of emergency admissions direct from the Emergency Department; referrals are received from Local Injury Units within the hospital group. Referrals from General Practitioners should be directed to the consultants’ secretary.
