Acute Psychiatric Unit (5B)

Unit 5B is a 40-bed Acute Mental Health Unit located in the grounds of University Hospital Limerick. 

The Unit offers a comprehensive Mental Health Service to adults, the elderly and also provides a limited service to adolescents. The catchment area covered is the city of Limerick and County. 

The unit offers its residents a wide range of medical and specialist services in addition to mental health services. 

The Unit is approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrist as a training area for doctors gaining experience in Psychiatry for the C.G.P. course and the M.R.C. Psych. Course. 

It is approved by An Bord Altranais as a training area for psychiatric student nurses and also for general nursing students gaining psychiatric experience. 

It is also an approved centre for the admission and detention of patients under the Mental Health Act 2001 and has regular visits from the Mental Health Commission.
