World Suicide Prevention Day 2019
This is the second year that "Working Together to Prevent Suicide" is the theme for World Suicide Prevention Day.
The most essential ingredient for effective global suicide prevention is collaboration and we all have a role to play. Together we can collectively address the challenges presented by suicidal behaviour in society today.
Through Connecting for Life, Ireland’s national strategy to reduce suicide 2015-2020, a vision is set out of an Ireland where fewer lives are lost through suicide, and where communities and individuals are empowered to improve their mental health and wellbeing.
This World Suicide Prevention Day, don’t underestimate the power of a conversation. Take a minute to reach out to someone - it could make all the difference and change a life.
People in suicidal distress are often not looking for specific advice but merely to be listened to with compassion and empathy. Encourage them to tell their own story in their way and at their own pace.
By engaging in active listening and reaching out to those who are vulnerable, stronger, more resilient communities are built.
If someone you know is feeling suicidal, you may feel afraid to discuss this with them.
