Linda who smoked for over 25 years having started at the age of 14, can’t quite believe how quitting has helped her regain her confidence and quality time with her family. Linda tried on a couple of occasions to kick the habit and was quit for 2 years but relapsed. After these failed attempts, she needed help and contacted the Stop Smoking Service in Monaghan. Here is Linda’s story:
“Standing outside the back door to have a smoke instead of spending that time with my children and husband, the guilt I couldn’t bear any longer. Nobody around me smoked, my husband quit 10 years ago and I wanted to take my control back. I had stopped previously but to my disappointment I relapsed. Last October, I decided to get in contact with the Stop Smoking clinic in Carrickmacross, unfortunately I couldn’t attend my first appointment but Aine, the Stop Smoking Advisor was very accommodating and we had a chat over the phone about my smoking history and behaviours with smoking, she gave me a few tips including the 5D’s to get my head prepared to quit and we scheduled another appointment before discussing a quit date.
My quit journey has been very challenging and without the professional help and clinic check ins which kept me on track I would not be 7months smoke free. The advice and support from Aine and using Nicotine Replacement Therapy really helped. I had previously used some of the NRT products but had been using them wrong, so I learned a lot. Having my carbon monoxide levels in my blood and breath measured every week by Aine at clinic was really an eye opener. Seeing it improve week on week to a normal level was a great boost and motivator for me.
“I am happier, healthier, have more energy and no longer have a tired foggy head, I have started walking and now have that time to spend with my children and husband. I couldn’t afford to stay at home with my kids if I was still a smoker”
“My advice to anyone who wants to stop smoking is to take it one day at a time, get professional help by contacting your local Stop Smoking Clinic and if I can do it anyone can”.
