HSE Media Release: 3 March 2020
EOLAS is a mental health information and learning programme for services users with a diagnosis of Schizophrenia or Bipolar Disorder, Psychosis and their families/close friends.
EOLAS uses a unique model in the delivery of the programme involving people with self-experience, family members and clinicians working together to provide information and promote recovery. EOLAS consists of two parallel programmes, each lasting 8 weeks, a programme for services users and a programme for families/close friends.
Each session lasts for 90 minutes and allows time for discussion and questions. Different topics are covered each week with guest speakers for a number of sessions, Programmes are delivered by two co-facilitators, one of whom is a service user or family member and the other a clinician.
The programmes are designed, delivered and developed through a collaborative process. The project was developed by Dr Pat Gibbons and the Celbridge Adult Mental Health Team, users of the mental health services and their families, SHINE, Irish Advocacy Network, Trinity College Dublin and Kildare Youth Services. EOLAS was initially funded by the Genio Foundation and is now funded by the HSE.
EOLAS has been delivered in the Sligo/Leitrim/South Donegal/West Cavan HSE area since 2015 and plans are in place to offer the programmes to Service Users and Family Members/Close Friends locally over the coming years. The project is being supported by mental health services across the country and specifically by mental health practitioners who are coordinating its delivery. The programme is evidence-based and has been evaluated.
A previous participant on the programme commented, "I don't know that anyone can fully understand what it's like unless you've been there.... that is why I found it really important that a service user (facilitator) was there. This does make you feel that it is achievable."
