    The Health Service Executive, Department of Health and Children and National Council on Ageing and Older people have jointly prepared a strategy to "Prevent Falls and Fractures in Ireland's Ageing Population".

    HSE finalising out of hours childcare emergency placement plans

    The HSE and the Department of Health and Children (DoHC) have been in discussion for some time on the development of a comprehensive 24 hour, seven day a week, out of hours childcare service. In the current economic climate, it is not possible to progress the fully comprehensive dedicated out of hours service. However, in the context of the discussions with the DoHC in recent weeks, the HSE is currently focusing on the provision of emergency placements for children on an out of hours basis.

    London symposium to mark 275th anniversary of Edward Worth Library

    A collection of books housed in the HSE building, Dr Steevens' Hospital in Dublin, is to be the subject of an international symposium in the Royal Society, London later this year. The symposium, to be held in November, will mark the 275th anniversary of the library's founding and details are on the Edward Worth Library's website at www.edwardworthlibrary.ie. The library was founded by physician and book collector Edward Worth (1678-1733) and houses 4,400 books dating back hundreds of years.

    First All-Island Census of the Traveller Population

    Preparations are now well underway for the first all island Census of Traveller Population to be carried out in the coming months. The Census, which will include information on accommodation, is part of the All-Ireland Traveller Health Status Study launched last year. Irish Travellers are a small indigenous minority with a unique shared history, culture, customs and language. Their distinctive lifestyle and culture, based on a nomadic tradition makes them an identifiable group, both to themselves and others.
