‘Meet the Midwife’ event for Traveller Women held at Mayo General Hospital

28th May 2008

An information morning for traveller women entitled ‘Meet the Midwife’ was held at Mayo General Hospital on Wednesday, 28th May. This information session was being organised by the Department of Public Health Nursing, Mayo; the Maternity Division of Mayo General Hospital and the Mayo Traveller Support Group Primary Health Care Project for Travellers in Ballina.

The ‘Meet the Midwife’ information morning provided traveller women in Co. Mayo with an opportunity to meet with the Maternity Services in the hospital, and topics that were covered on the day included:

  • Meeting the staff of the maternity services
  • Health care during pregnancy
  • Information on antenatal classes
  • Breastfeeding support
  • Question and answer session

Dolores Mullahy, Public Health Nurse, Traveller Health Mayo, says: This event was a great opportunity for traveller women to come together to gain information and to share their own experiences and expectations of the maternity services at Mayo General Hospital .  This information may be very valuable to them or their sisters or friends in the future.
