On Yer Bike - Cyclists Get Into Gear For Cork City Hospitals Childrens Club Eurodisney Appeal

More than 250 cyclists from across Cork City & County are gearing up for the tenth annual Kinsale Lions ‘Cycle Rally’ from Midleton to Kinsale on Saturday next, October 25th 2008.

Organised by the Cork City Hospitals Childrens Club in association with Kinsale & District Lions Club, the sponsored cycle aims to send sick children attending hospitals in Cork (and their carers) to Eurodisney, Paris, for a dream holiday in the New Year.

The event commences at 11 am at Midleton Community Hospital: The cyclists, who range in age from 10 to 60, will be seen off by Kinsale and District Lions Club representatives along with a host of well wishers from Midleton Community Hospital (having made two circuits of Midleton accompanied by a fire brigade from the Midleton Fire Service).

The cyclists will be accompanied by Civil Defence and Fire Service vehicles and garda motorbikes – lights flashing and the occasional siren going to attract the attention of passes by.  If that’s not enough to catch the publics attention, collectors (transported on the back of a lorry!) will be donning the costumes of Lions Club lions, clowns and Disney characters Mickey & Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Tinkerbell, Peter Pan and ‘Bear in the Big Blue House’.  Disney characters in full costumes will also be collecting at various points in the city centre from 10am – 3pm.

The group will leave Midelton and make their way to Cork city via the Dunkettle Roundabout where they will be met by a Cork City fire brigade and a number of garda bikes.

Arriving on to the quays for 1 pm the group will make their way to the Irish naval ship, the LE Emer where they will be welcomed aboard for refreshments by Commander Daragh Kirwin.  The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Brian Bermingham will also be on board in a show of support for the cyclists and will address the rally (Photo opportunity).

The cyclists will then be accompanied by a number of cyclists from the Ballinhassig Vintage Cycle Club on their journey through Patrick's street. The group proceed out of the city via Cork University Hospital to the Bandon Road roundabout and on to Kinsale for 5 pm. Before entering the town, the cyclists will regroup at Kinsale Fire Station and then complete their journey at the Trident Hotel, where they will be welcomed by Cllr Dermot Collins, Mayor of Kinsale and take a well deserved rest and enjoy the refreshments on offer.

Event co-ordinator, John Looney says: “This is an event we really look forward to each year. The Kinsale & District Lions Club are fantastic supporters of the Cork City Hospitals Childrens Club and the holiday to Euro-Disney is a thrilling experience for the children and the staff who give up their free time to accompany them.  Last year we sent a group of 44 children and 30 helpers and we are hoping to send even more children next time. The public are so supportive of this event and we are urging anyone who can, to come out, cheer us on and make a donation to the collectors along the route.”

Ted Whitaker of Kinsale Lions Club reiterates their support for the event: “We’re delighted to organise the cycle rally for such a good cause. Every year, the event gathers momentum and more and more people lend their support. It’s quite a sight to see all the bikes and costumes en masse and we would like to thank those who support us in making this event a reality.  It’s a great day out for everyone involved, its great fun and the money raised, which increases year on year, gives a wonderful holiday to children who really deserve a great trip.”

Anyone wishing to join the cyclists, sponsor them or make any contribution to the collection, can do so by contacting Ted Whitaker of Kinsale Lions Club, Summercove, Kinsale, Mobile 086 2561949 or John Looney, Cork City Children’s Club on Mobile 086 8193268.
