The Palliative Care week national campaign will take place from 8 to 14 September 2024. This week is an opportunity for you to talk to your family and friends about what your understanding of palliative care is. There are many misconceptions about palliative care such as it is only about end of life care however palliative care is about supporting and enabling people to live through their life limiting illness. Providing palliative care is the responsibility of all healthcare professionals however over the course of someone’s illness they may require referral to the specialist palliative care services, known by many as the hospice service. The theme of this years Palliative Care week is ‘You, me and Palliative Care’.
It highlights the importance of healthcare professionals and the general public ensuring they understand the meaning of palliative care.
With this in mind North West Hospice will host two information stands that week. Please feel free to come along to meet some of our specialist palliative care staff on the day.
The first takes place in the foyer of Sligo University Hospital on Wednesday 11 September 2024 from 9.30am to 1.30pm
The second takes place in the foyer of Markievicz House, Barrack Street, Sligo on Thursday 12 September 2024 from 9.30am to 11.30am.
Jacinta Kelly Director of Nursing North West Hospice said “We want to use this week as an opportunity for the general public and healthcare professionals to talk about palliative care and their understanding of it. This week is about raising public awareness and increasing understanding of what a palliative care approach is.”
Nuala Ginnelly Operational Manager North West Hospice added “This years theme emphasises the message that palliative care can affect us all so it is essential people understand what a palliative care approach means. It may be in your own personal life or someone in your community.”
One North West Hospice Service User said “My stay at North West Hospice was one of the greatest experiences of my life which will remain with me forever.”
