Sheil Hospital Development

5th July 2018

The HSE is delighted to announce the next phase in the development of the Sheil Hospital to provide an 80 bed Community Hospital within the Health Campus in Ballyshannon.

A notice will be published this week on the Governments Procurement and in the Official Journal of European Community seeking Expressions of Interest from suitably qualified Contractors who are interested in tendering for this significant prestigious project.

Applications will be sought from Main Contractors, Mechanical Contractors and Electrical Contractors who will be shortlisted to establish an approved tender list by the end of the summer. It is envisaged that a suitable Contracting team will be procured by the end of this year and building works will commence in early 2019.

The HSE will also be seeking submissions from Building Providers for the provision of temporary accommodation to facilitate the existing residents/patients during the construction phase.  This temporary residential accommodation will be provided on the grounds of the Rock Nursing Unit in Ballyshannon.

The 80 bed unit will accommodate both residents/patients of the Sheil Hospital and Rock Nursing Unit.  It will consist of 66 single bedrooms and 7 twin bedrooms in a combination of long stay, short stay and dementia wards. The project also includes the upgrade of the existing Sheil building to accommodate a Day hospital amongst other ancillary services.

It is envisaged that construction will start in early 2019 and the new unit will be complete and ready for occupation in late 2020. The estimated cost of this project is in the region of €19million.

Donna Reid, Director of Nursing at Sheil Hospital and Rock Nursing Unit Ballyshannon welcomed this development stating “I am delighted that this project is commencing to the next phase and we will continue to engage with residents, their family members and staff as the project progresses”.
