Stress Control - Learn the skills to get on top of stress

HSE Community Healthcare Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Monaghan, Sligo in association with Community and Statutory Partners are running the highly regarded six week Stress Control online programme beginning Monday January 23rd 2023.

Stress affects people from all walks of life. Although no two people will have exactly the same problems, we all have a lot in common when we are feeling stressed.  We can find it hard to relax, we can worry a great deal, we can lose confidence and a sense of control and feel down. According to Dr Aedamar Bergin (Principal Psychologist) and Dr Christina Corbett (Senior Clinical Psychologist) with the HSE, “whilst it’s normal to have a certain degree of stress in our lives, for many of us our stress levels have increased significantly over the past couple of years. When stress is running our lives there are often serious consequences – our health may begin to deteriorate as our immune system becomes compromised by stress hormones continually flooding our body, physical tension becomes the new normal, and we no longer know how to relax.

Our relationships at home or at work may suffer as we become more snappy and irritable, our thinking becomes less clear, more confused and consequently we may make poor decisions in our day to day.”

“We may find ourselves with high levels of anxiety or depression that we can’t seem to shift. All of these consequences develop into vicious circles in our lives, we get stressed during the day, we find we can’t sleep because of worrying and then we are exhausted the next day and even more vulnerable.”

Stress Control is a free six session programme. Each session lasts for 90 minutes and is delivered online. ‘Stress Control’ was devised by Dr. Jim White, a Clinical Psychologist in Glasgow, to help the large number of people who suffer from stress and who were keen to learn how to tackle their problems themselves. Irish based research (or ‘Research carried out in Ireland’) on behalf of NUIG and the HSE (Corbett et al., 2019) has proven the effectiveness of Stress Control in reducing levels of Anxiety and Depression, and improving Psychological well-being

2) Controlling your Body
3) Controlling your Thoughts
4) Controlling your Actions
5) Controlling Panicky Feelings and Getting a Good Night’s Sleep and
6) Controlling your Future
