Medical Gases: Oxygen Cylinders

Medical Gases: Oxygen Cylinders

Oxygen is a safe product to administer and handle, however, at high concentrations and under pressure it is potentially dangerous and needs to be treated with respect. As a result oxygen cylinders should be handled with care. It is important to note that all devices including oxygen cylinders must be subject to risk assessment by the Line Manager/Responsible Person and used, handled, transported and stored in line with existing supplier guidelines and the updated safety alert issued by the Health and Safety Authority

The HSE has made available (via HSELanD) a short guide to explain the features of BOC Healthcare's oxygen cylinders, fitted with integral valves, together with a step by step demonstration of how to safely operate a cylinder.   It is important that any HSE personnel who operate or handle such oxygen cylinders are made aware that this guidance is now available – This guidance is a mandatory module for all users of integral valve medical gas cylinders.
