Manual Handling Training

From October 2019, all Manual Handling Training will be provided

  • locally in services that have Manual Handling Instructors
  • through the new framework by booking directly with Optima Training & Consulting Limited (Contact details: 061 574058) or 
  • through a combination of both of the above

All manual handling training will be funded locally, with the exception of Instructor Training which will continue to be funded by the National Health and Safety Function.

Training Delivery Options:

Option 1 - HSELanD E-learning module for theory training and classroom based practical techniques training delivered by by a HSE instructor or Optima Training & Consulting Ltd

Option 2 - Classroom based theory training and practical techniques training delivered by a HSE instructor or Optima Training & Consulting Ltd

Due to the considerable benefits in terms of accessibility, standardisation, cost and efficiency associated with E-learning, option 1 is preferred.

HSELanD E-learning module:

For manual handling courses, it will be essential to complete the HSELanD Manual Handling and People Handling e-learning Theory Module within the 6 weeks prior  to attending the practical module.  Proof of completion of the e-learning module must be shown to the instructor.

Practical techniques training:

The following practical courses are available directly from a HSE Instructor or Optima Training & Consulting Limited:

  • Refresher Training is the same training as the standard and practical course. Employees must undertake repeat training at not greater than three‐yearly intervals and when there is any major change in the work involved, or equipment used, or when an employee is transferred to another activity requiring different loads to be handled.

Accessing Training from Optima Training & Consulting Limited

Step 1:  Complete your Local Training Needs Assessment
Step 2: 

Complete a Locally Co-ordinated Training Request Form which includes identifying any fitness to attend training issues. 

For new training venues, complete a Venue Checklist.

Step 4: Finalise your Locally Co-ordinated Training Request Form
Step 5:

Complete a Notification to Activate Service Form (NASF) for each training program (lot) per year

e.g. For 10 sessions of Manual Handling training and 20 sessions of People Handling Training, you need 2 NASFs.

Set up an account with Optima Training & Consulting Limited and raise a Purchase Order (PO).

The budget holder must sign the Notification to Activate Service Form (NASF).

Send the signed NASF and Locally Coordinated Training Request Form to Optima Training & Consulting Limited for signing.


Note: Once sent, you have activated the contractual relationship between you and Optima Training & Consulting Limited.
