Haematology Laboratory

General Information

The Haematology Laboratory is situated within the Pathology Department at Letterkenny University Hospital and covers various areas within the haematology discipline:

  • Routine Haematology:- encompassing complete blood counts(CBC), manual white cell differentials, reticulocyte counting, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and other referral tests for haematological diagnostic and disease monitoring tests.
  • Coagulation;- routine and special. Routine encompasses prothrombin time, partial thromboplastin time, fibrinogen assay and D Dimer assay. Special Coagulation refers to testing for Hypercoagulable states and investigation of bleeding disorders such as clotting factor assays.

The department provides a comprehensive service during normal working hours (0800-2000 M-F), an urgent service at weekends and bank holidays and a 24-hour emergency service for investigations required for the immediate clinical management of patients.

Routine Opening Hours

Monday - Friday: 8am to 8pm

Outside the hours of 9.00 and 17.00 the Medical Scientist "on-call" can be contacted for URGENT requests on 173-815 (internal) or via the switchboard at Letterkenny General (0749125888).

If urgent analysis is required, please call the Haematology lab on numbers listed above.

Results and Enquiries

Results will be available for viewing on wards (on Laboratory Information System, KEPLER) following authorisation by the laboratory staff.

GP results are available via Healthlink.  Printed reports are delivered to all requesting locations.

Telephoning Results

Abnormal results falling outside defined limits will be telephoned to the requesting source.

External Quality Assurance Schemes

The Haematology laboratory participates in relevant external third party assurance schemes.

This includes schemes operated by:

  • UKNEQAS (The UK, National External Quality Assurance Scheme)
  • IEQAS (Irish External Quality Assurance Scheme)
